Overview

Rabbit Valley is a campground near Fruita, Colorado, close to the Colorado/Utah border. The scenery is beautiful, with a distinct desert vibe. You may spot collared lizards sunbathing on the rocks, and when the cacti are blooming, they add even more color to the landscape.

We rode the Jouflas Trail and were treated to stunning views of the Colorado River below. We even spotted petroglyphs.

Access

The road in can be rough, especially for bigger rigs. There are several dips, bumps, and turns to navigate. You may want to check with the local ranger for current road conditions before visiting.

Equestrian

There are pens for the horses, but there are no trees and no shade. This is a dry camping area with absolutely no hookups, so bring your own water for your horses—and bring a lot.

We stayed at the Mesa County Fairgrounds and trailered over. The fairgrounds offer water and covered stalls.

Important Notes

There is no shade, and the area can get very hot. This is a desert, and the temperatures can be brutal. I would recommend not visiting during the summer months.

There is a vault toilet. Rabbit Valley is also a popular area for off-road vehicles and bicyclists, and you may find non-equestrian campers there.

You will need to make reservations if you would like to camp there.
