About EquestrianCamping.com
EquestrianCamping.com is built from real trips, real miles, and firsthand experience. We are based out of Colorado and have been horse camping for over 7 years, starting close to home and gradually expanding into surrounding states including Wyoming, South Dakota, Utah, New Mexico, Nebraska, Arizona, and Kansas. We will continue expanding into more states and sharing what we find along the way.
This site was built as something we wish we had found when we were first getting started. Finding places that truly work for hauling horses — especially with a living quarters (LQ) trailer — is not always easy. It takes time, research, and often trial and error to find campgrounds that are both accessible and genuinely equine-friendly. Over the years, we've learned a lot about what works, what doesn't, and what to look for before ever pulling in, and we continue to learn something new on every trip.
As much as we enjoy campgrounds with full hookups and covered stalls, we enjoy just as much — if not more — camping in remote areas with nothing but our two horses. Many of our trips are just the two of us, while others are shared with friends who have the same passion for getting out and riding.
There are times we travel with two trucks — one pulling the living quarters (LQ) trailer and the other pulling a bumper pull. Bringing the bumper pull gives us much more flexibility once camp is set up, allowing us to explore additional trailheads without having to tear everything down.
Many campgrounds offer great riding directly from camp, which is always ideal. At the same time, there are often excellent trails in the surrounding areas that are well worth exploring. Some campgrounds also offer trailer rentals, which can be a helpful option depending on your setup.
Not all trailheads we visit are able to accommodate larger rigs, so knowing what to expect ahead of time can make a big difference when planning a trip.
Everything shared here is based on our own experiences. We've been to every campground and ridden every trail listed on this site. We don't allow outside submissions or secondhand reports — what you read here is what we've personally seen and experienced.
We share what we've learned, observed, and found useful in hopes that it helps others spend more time riding and less time researching. At the same time, always do your own homework and make sure you're comfortable with the information you rely on. After spending countless hours researching and visiting new places — some that end up being "once and done" — we've also found many campgrounds that we return to again and again. Those are the places worth sharing.
