Horse camping for Willis Creek

Willis Creek Slot Canyon is an absolutely beautiful, bucket-list ride that takes you through stunning canyon walls and incredible rock formations. Riding directly through the canyon offers a unique and unforgettable experience you won’t find just anywhere. The drive in can vary depending on recent weather and road maintenance, with a few sections that some might consider a bit “sketchy,” but it’s generally very manageable. We typically park right at the trailhead, backing in toward the far end, and the GPX map clearly shows the exact canyon entrance we used.

The entrance into the slot canyon is quite rocky, so you’ll want to take your time getting started. Once inside, there are a couple of rocky step sections to work through, but beyond that the footing is mostly sandy creek bed. Expect to spend a good portion of the ride walking through shallow water as you make your way through the narrows.

Be sure to check local weather conditions before heading out—you definitely don’t want to get caught in a flash flood while in the canyon.
