Horse camping for Dark Canyon Trail

This trail can be ridden from Horse Ranch Park. However, riding into the actual canyon from HRP would make it about a 26-mile round trip. We chose to trailer over to the Dark Canyon Trailhead instead. From there, it’s a beautiful ride through lush vegetation, sometimes so overgrown that you can’t even see the trail. You then transition into riding through the trees very near Anthracite Creek. We rode a little over 4 miles before turning around. Our goal was to follow the creek-side trail to the Devil’s Stairway connector and then head back, but we decided to turn around before reaching it. Even though you are near the creek, there isn’t a good place to water the horses along the trail. This is a gorgeous ride!
